About Garpel Estate

Garpel Estate has been in the same family since 1781 when it was acquired by John Macadam.

It extends to approximately 6,700 acres and is made up of a mixture of inbye pasture, woodland (some designated ancient woodland), wetland and moorland.

A Varied Environment With Great Biodiversity

Garpel Estate is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) for its assemblage of moorland birds, including curlew, golden plover, hen harrier, pergegrine, short eared owl and red grouse. Airds Moss, in the southern part of the Estate, is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for its peatland.

As of 2025, Garpel Estate is accredited as a special area of Wildlife Conservation by Wildlife Estates Scotland. Through this accreditation the Garpel promotes exemplary habitat and wildlife management practices.

Discover Ayrshire

Ayrshire is the birthplace of Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns and home to his largest collection of works in the world. It is also home to the renowned Championship Golf Courses of Prestwick, Turnberry and Troon.

Garpel is also the home of a Peatland Restoration Project supported by Peatland Action. We are very grateful for the support that Peatland Action have provided the Estate to support carbon sequestration.
