Garpel Estate has been in the same family since 1781 when it was acquired by John Macadam.
It extends to approximately 6,700 acres and is made up of a mixture of inbye pasture, woodland (some designated ancient woodland), wetland and moorland.
Garpel Estate is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Protection Area (SPA) for its assemblage of moorland birds, including curlew, golden plover, hen harrier, pergegrine, short eared owl and red grouse. Airds Moss, in the southern part of the Estate, is a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for its peatland.
As of 2025, Garpel Estate is accredited as a special area of Wildlife Conservation by Wildlife Estates Scotland. Through this accreditation the Garpel promotes exemplary habitat and wildlife management practices.
